Friday 14th Oct.2011 – Relax ,swim and clean – Walk (Cirque du Bout du Monde) **** sunny and warm
We had a really relaxing start to the day, a lie in, read followed by exercises and a swim in the Lac :) Then I set about cleaning La Franqui off all my gear. Washed the boards, sails, masts, boom etc., in the lac and dried them out in the sun. We had our breakfast and cracked yet more walnuts and almonds. By this time it was nearly mid-day and we finally left Salagou at 2 p.m. Drove about 20 miles through Lodeve and up into the Cevenne again to find the Cirque du Bout du Monde. It was like finding a needle in a haystack! Considering it is in the tourist information book and on our big atlas of France, there were no signposts to it at all! We had a couple of false starts but finally found the road and finding nothing at the end of it, walked up a cart track and there it was – a spectacular view of the horseshoe gorge with dark green pine trees (Austrian pine apparently) all around and creamy, craggy rock. We had a short walk to take in the view then moved the van down a cart track/road(?) into the forest and found a brilliant parking space perfect for lunch (at 4p.m!). We decided we would stay here the night and went for a brilliant walk down into the gorge but there were so many trees you couldn’t see very much of it. The path was very intriguing and we kept going for nearly an hour. We decided it probably led to the village right at the bottom so turned back and found our way back to the van before it got dark – always a result! Pork escallopes with bacon, onion and mushroom and a tin of dauphenoise potatoes for tea :) why pork is so cheap in France is a mystery because for every other meat, including sausages, you need to take out a mortgage!
